Rokita Statement on Constitution Day

Statement

Date: Sept. 16, 2011
Issues: Constitution

Today Rep. Todd Rokita released this statement marking Constitution Day, the anniversary of the signing of the Constitution:

"Our Constitution stands among the world's most critical documents and proves that we live in an exceptional nation. The creation of this document was the first time that the most successful ideas for self-governance all came together at the same time, in the same place.

While this fact is more or less taken for granted today, it had not happened successfully before 1787. It is still not a universally held practice despite our proven success with self-government. Every day around the world and even in our own country, there are still those that reject, and endeavor to destroy, the fundamental principles put forth in our Constitution.

On this 224th Anniversary of the signing of our Constitution, and at a time when the federal government has strayed far from the responsibility it was granted by this document, let us rededicate ourselves to returning government to its proper role so future generations have the same freedom and opportunity that have always been the birthright of every American."

The Constitution was signed on September 17, 1787. Constitution Day is observed on September 16 this year.
