DeLauro Statement on New Unemployment Numbers

WASHINGTON - Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3) released the following statement in response to the announcement by the Bureau of Labor Statistics that 144,000 jobs were created in August. Economists have called for a net gain of 150,000 jobs per month just to keep pace with population growth.

"Each month's unemployment numbers are further evidence that the Bush Administration's policies of tax breaks and job outsourcing continue to weaken our economy. While we welcome the news that 144,000 jobs were created this month, this number falls short of the jobs needed to keep pace with the growing workforce and fails to live up to what the Bush Administration said would follow as a result of its 2003 tax cuts.

"The Bush Administration continues to claim that our economy is turning the corner. But under their watch, American workers have seen rising unemployment and threats to their overtime pay and health insurance.

"Today's unemployment numbers prove the Bush Administration is on track to have the worst job creation record since the Great Depression."
