Issue Position

Our nation's economy is struggling to recover and too many school districts across the country are making painful choices because of their budget shortfalls. In this difficult environment, I agree with President Obama that our children's education is the best investment we can make as a nation. Strong and sustained education funding is needed to ensure American students are well-prepared to participate and excel in the workforce. We cannot ask students, teachers and schools to do more with less.

Although most education funding is provided by state and local governments, federal education funding is vital because it helps provide all children access to a free, complete and high-quality education. I strongly agree that education must be well-rounded. Students need to develop strong reading and math skills, but they also need a solid foundation in science, physical education, history and the arts, to succeed in the 21st Century.
