Issue Position: Government Spending

Issue Position

Economic health is closely tied to government spending. Unfortunately, over the last few years the government spent more and more while the economy got weaker and weaker. Pushing the bill to the next generation is clearly becoming an unsustainable course of action. We must make serious spending cuts if we hope to get our economy moving towards prosperity again.

I'm proud to have already voted to cut Congress' own budget by 5%. I'm also proud to have voted for a FY2011 Continuing Resolution that cut $100 billion from President Obama's original budget proposal. In addition, I voted in favor of an additional $24 billion in spending cuts in amendments that were not adopted to that Continuing Resolution.

But while this is all a good start, it's only the tip of the iceberg considering that the federal budget currently spends over $3 trillion annually. A full two-thirds of our federal spending consists of entitlement programs and interest on our debt payments. We must get serious about entitlement reform and paying down our debt if we ever hope to get government spending fully under control.
