As a member of Congress, I have a 100 percent pro-life voting record and have consistently supported a ban on abortion with the exceptions of rape, incest and endangerment to a mother's life. I believe all persons share an essential human dignity, including unborn children. I have supported efforts in Congress to end partial-birth abortions, stop federally funded abortions, and prevent unethical research on embryos and the use of human cloning. I strongly oppose using taxpayer dollars to fund organizations that perform abortions.
I have cosponsored numerous pieces of pro-life legislation including the Life at Conception Act, the Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act of 2011, and the Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act.
The current Administration has gone to great lengths to end established pro-life policies, opening the door to taxpayer funding of abortion. Through issuing executive orders and with the recently passed health care reform bill, taxpayer dollars can now be used to subsidized abortion coverage overturning a long held policy of prohibiting tax dollars from being used to pay for elective abortions. I was a co-sponsor of an amendment to the Senate-passed health care reform bill that would have prevented federal funds from being used to cover elective abortions or to subsidize health plans that cover elective abortions, but unfortunately the final language of the Act allows for federal tax dollars to fund elective abortion services.
As a nation, we have come a long way in protecting the unborn since the Supreme Court's decision in Roe v. Wade, but clearly we have a long way to go in this fight. I believe we should strive to create a culture of life as a country, and I will continue to fight hard in Congress to promote life in this nation.
