Congresswoman Chellie Pingree voted against a massive defense spending bill today that includes $119 billion for wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
"The country can no longer afford to spend billions of dollars a week to continue to fight wars that don't make our country any safer," Pingree said. "Our men and women in uniform have served bravely and honorably, but they have paid a high price and it's time to bring them home."
A recent report found that on a per capita basis, the casualty rate for Maine military personnel in Afghanistan is the highest of any state in the country.
Pingree, a Member of the House Armed Services Committee, was one of only 87 House Members to vote against the Defense Appropriations bill (the final vote was 336-87.)
