Murphy Statement on Afghanistan

Statement

Date: June 22, 2011

Congressman Chris Murphy made the following statement in reaction to President Obama's Afghanistan address:

"I am encouraged that President Obama has decided to accelerate the United States withdrawal from Afghanistan by bringing home 10,000 troops by the end of this year and 30,000 by next summer. But this plan falls short of the American people's expectation that this July would mark the beginning of a full withdrawal of all combat troops. Our soldiers have done everything asked of them and more, but the factors that will determine Afghanistan's long term security and stability are largely out of their control, and the United States cannot afford to spend $2.5 billion per week maintaining this level of presence. We need a plan to bring all our combat troops home as soon as possible, and I plan to use both my voice and my vote as a Member of Congress to make this happen."
