Murphy Statement on Vote against Budget Deal

Statement

Today, Congressman Chris Murphy (CT-5) voted against the budget deal to fund the government through September. The bill cut $38 billion from this year's budget, mostly from programs that support the poor, women and children.

"The deficit can't be closed simply on the backs of the poor, women, and children. Everyone should be expected to sacrifice. Tax cuts for the oil industry, bloated subsidies for massive industrial farms, and our inefficient defense budget were inexplicably spared in this deal. As we look for ways to cut spending, it's just not right to start and end with those who can least afford the hit," said Murphy.
