Rep. Fleming Declines Salary if Government Shuts Down

Statement

Date: April 8, 2011
Location: Washington, D.C.

Congressman John Fleming, M.D. released the following statement today as Senate Democrats and President Obama refuse to come up with a solution that cuts government spending and funds our armed services for the rest of the year.

"In the event of any government shutdown by Senate Democrats and President Obama, I will refuse to take my salary from the taxpayer for the duration of the shutdown. I voted for H.R. 1255 the "Government Shutdown Prevention Act". This bill prohibits members of congress and President Obama from receiving a salary during a government shutdown. Senator Reid took no action on this bill in the senate. Maybe Senator Reid is more concerned with paying himself rather than paying our military."

Congressman Fleming also declined the automatic pay raise in 2009 and cosponsored H.R. 4255 in the last congress preventing a scheduled pay raise.
