Congressional Page Program

The Congressional Page Program will soon be accepting applications for the summer 2004 Page sessions. The first summer session lasts from June 6 through June 26 and the second begins July 4 through July 24.

The Page Program is a wonderful learning opportunity for high school students to serve their country while seeing firsthand how our government works. I would like to personally encourage qualifying Ohio third district students to apply for one of 72 total positions, 48 slots that are reserved for Republican Members of Congress.

Students selected for the Congressional Page Program, will have something in common with the richest person in the world. Yes, Bill Gates was once a House Page and to this day remains enormously interested in politics.

The workday begins at 9:00 am for summer Pages and extends to at least 5:00 p.m., or until the House adjourns for the day - whichever is later. Pages serve primarily as messengers, delivering legislative material between various buildings on Capitol Hill. They have an opportunity to interact with lawmakers and their staffs and gain first hand, personal knowledge of how the legislative branch works.

Pages are required to live at the Page Residence Hall under the supervision of a director, assistant director and proctors who reside on the premise. There are separate floors for male and female Pages.

Pages are employees of the U.S, House of Representatives, and play an important role in the legislative process. It is a paying position, so students not only gain valuable experience and knowledge but also have an opportunity to earn money that can be used as spending money or better yet, toward their college educations.

To be eligible for the summer program, applicants must submit:

An official transcript of all grades (from 9th through at least the first semester of the current year) and have at least a "B" average (3.0 on a 4-point scale) or better in the five major subjects (English, science, mathematics, social studies and foreign language)

A signed parental consent form

A 50-100 word essay on why they want to become a Republican Page

A resume of extra-curricular activities

Three letter of recommendations

In addition, applicants must be:

At least 16 years of age at the time of their appointment;

Willing to serve as a page for approximately one month during the summer before or after their junior year of high school; And have a social security number.

I'm looking forward to nominating some of the best students in Ohio's 3rd district for a unique learning experience as well as a chance to serve their country as a Page for the U.S. House of Representatives.

Now, I'm not suggesting that by becoming a Congressional Page a student will necessarily become the richest person in the world, but they will have at least one thing in common with Bill Gates.
