President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt resigned, bowing to a historic popular uprising. The streets of Cairo exploded moments after it was announced during evening prayers that Mubarak had passed all authority to a council of military leaders. "Clearly the news today is extraordinary and a real testament to the incredible people in Egypt who put their lives on the line and in some cases gave their lives," Sen. Bernie Sanders said during his weekly national radio call-in show. "The goal now - which will be very difficult to achieve -is for Egypt to make the transition to a democratic government with real legal safeguards," Sanders said on The Thom Hartmann Program.
