Since December 2007, the United States has been in a period of economic recession, the worst in our nation since the Great Depression of the 1930s. Currently, Georgia's unemployment rate of 9.5 percent is the second highest unemployment rate in the nation. As a result of our nation's financial crisis, I believe it was imperative for the American government to act in providing assistance to citizens affected by the economic downtown. Throughout this difficult time, my colleagues in Congress and I are doing everything we can to alleviate the general economic trials that Americans are facing right now. Under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act program passed by Congress in 2009 employment increased by 2.5 million to 3.6 million jobs and raised the nation's annual economic output by almost $400 billion averting "what could have been called Great Depression 2.0." I believe that it is important to continue to support families who are struggling with unemployment during this difficult time. In order to assist families and individuals in need, I've voted in favor of unemployment insurance extensions and will continue to vote in favor of domestic job expansion programs. I want to assure you that I will continue working in Congress to alleviate the economic hardships faced by you and so many other Americans.
