The founders understood that the federal government was to execute the specific tasks as enumerated in Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution. Our founders understood that we promote the general welfare by limiting the role and function of the federal government in our daily lives, not promote the general welfare by being a welfare state. Conservatives know that for government to give to one citizen it must first take from another. Founding Father James Madison warned against using the General Welfare Clause as the means for government to intrude into our lives and erode our freedoms. Our founders were very clear, but unfortunately, we have lost that clarity over the generations and we need to get it back. The people of the state of Texas can manage their own affairs and do not require the adult supervision of Washington, D.C. As we are structured now the states, counties, and cities have become more like subcontractors to the federal government. It's time for the states to reassert their constitutional role and roll back an overreaching, overpowering federal government.
