Issue Position: 2nd Amendment

Issue Position

Date: July 21, 2010
Issues: Guns

As a former prosecutor, I have never felt that gun control equates to crime control. The vast majority of gun crime is a result of individuals who already possess firearms illegally. Therefore, passing more restrictive laws on firearm use typically restricts only those who use guns legally, and often to defend themselves.

New Hampshire does not need more laws restricting gun ownership or use, but to ensure that criminals who use firearms illegally are prosecuted vigorously and are sentenced accordingly so that everyone knows that gun crime means hard time.

New Hampshire should join the 31 other states that have a "Castle Doctrine," ensuring that individuals have the right to defend themselves and their families in their own home. As Governor, I will lead efforts to pass such a law as well as to repeal the newly enacted restrictions on state property.

As an avid sportsman, I understand how significant the right to bear arms is to our culture here in New Hampshire. As someone who has written books and lectured extensively on the U.S. and State Constitution, I know just how critical the 2nd Amendment is to securing and maintaining our freedom.
