"Payments in Lieu of Taxes" (or PILT) are Federal payments to local governments that help offset losses in property taxes due to nontaxable Federal lands within their boundaries (http://www.doi.gov/pilt/)

It took me 3 years to assist in getting PILT fully funded for a 5 year cycle and I could not have done it with out the help and support of all of my fellow County Commissioners. Elko County alone, would have had a 3 million dollar shortfall if not alloted these additional funds. In addition, these funds assist in supporting local law enforcement, paramedic, fire departments, DOT and 50% is cycled back into pubic schooling to offset budget shortfalls. Without PILT monies, multiple Nevada counties would have been forced into a negative short fall. Every county in the state of Nevada benefited from this payment and hard work.This is your tax dollars coming back to your community.
