For 30 years I was a classroom teacher, school librarian and mentor to new teachers. Education remains my passion. Every child in Nevada deserves an education that ensures he or she is prepared to succeed in today's global economy. This is critical not only for our children's future, but for our economic recovery. Our efforts to create good jobs and diversify our economy depend on a well-trained workforce.
To accomplish this, we need a strong partnership between businesses and schools. We need strong academic programs and career and technical education opportunities. We need business mentoring programs and we need to make sure our schools are indeed preparing our kids for today's jobs. I am proud to have the support of both teachers and businesses with endorsements from both the Nevada State Education Association and the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce.
I know from first-hand experience how important it is to have a highly qualified teacher in every classroom. Recruiting and retaining the very best teachers for our classrooms must continue to be priorities. I sponsored legislation last session to improve the ability of our school districts to recruit teachers.
I will also continue to support efforts to reduce overcrowding in our classrooms, to improve our high school graduation rate, to make it easier for parents to get involved in their children's education and for parents and the public to get information about our schools' performance.
