Kaptur Calls H.R. 1586 a Win-Win for America

Press Release

Congresswoman Kaptur voted for H.R. 1586, the Education, Jobs, and Medicaid Assistance Act, which will save and create 319,000 jobs, including approximately 5,500 teaching jobs in Ohio.

Congresswoman Kaptur spoke with Bob Vasquez, president of the Toledo school board, prior to the vote. "We've had to cut school busing and crossing guards for our students, which hampers their safety and security," he said. "We have also had to lay off teachers and increase classroom sizes. This federal assistance will give us a chance to replenish some of the cuts we were forced to implement, so we can try to stay equal with other states for educational opportunities for students."

Kaptur said, "We are holding to the ideal that we are a nation where every person matters. We saved jobs for Ohio's teachers, firefighters and police officers. We will provide states with support for Medicaid for the most needy among us in these trying economic times.

"This is a win-win for America because, not only did we preserve education and safety in our nation, but we are paying for it by closing a $10 billion tax loophole for corporations that ship our jobs to other countries."

Companies have long been innovating their products in America and manufacturing them in other countries.

"Our trade deficit with other nations has hindered our economic growth and has put us on a path of selling the assets of our nation and leaving us vulnerable to a new form of tyranny. It's time to stop letting big corporations use these tax loopholes to take advantage of American workers," said Kaptur.

In addition, this legislation will reduce our national deficit by $1.4 billion over 10 years, according to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office.
