Today, Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito. R.W. Va., supported a Republican measure to save the taxpayers $1.1 billion over ten years by eliminating the Advance Earned Income Tax Credit. The cut was proposed by Rep. John Linder, R. GA, as part of the ongoing YouCut program designed by the Economic Recovery Working Group.
"In its ninth week, the YouCut program is still going strong. Over 1.5 million Americans have voted on spending cuts they want to see Washington enact and thousands more have suggested their own ways to save. I think we're finally getting the message through to our colleagues on the other side of the aisle, as more and more Democrats break from their party to support commonsense solutions to address our nation's addiction to spending," stated Capito.
In fact, this week's YouCut proposal was originally put forward by a Democratic Member.
"It's promising to see bipartisan support for these reforms, and I hope that we will all come back from the August district work period ready to pass these reasonable spending cuts," concluded Capito.
YouCut is designed to change the culture of spending into a culture of saving in Congress. It encourages Americans to vote, both online and on cell phones, on spending cuts they want to see the House enact. Thousands of Americans have also suggested their own ideas on how Congress can save.
