Statement

Bob Beck is a Manitou Springs resident who, on doctor's orders, has not been able to work since 2000, when he suffered two heart attacks. Mr. Beck, who was a teacher and counselor for 25 years, has a son currently serving in Afghanistan, and his wife suffers from diabetes.

About nine months ago, Mr. Beck filed for Social Security benefits. Upon filing, he was told that it would take 6 months to process his claim. Six months later--to the day--Mr. Beck called to check on the status of his claim. The Social Security Administration told him that it had been misplaced and that he would have to wait another 6 to 12 months. At that point, he called my Colorado Springs office. After working with my staff, Mr. Beck received a check for over $31,000 in back pay, and he will receive $1,277 a month.

For someone who was not expected to live after his second heart attack a decade ago, when his heart stopped five times on the way to the hospital, Bob Beck takes nothing for granted. "There is no logic or reason I should be alive. I am very blessed." He turns 60 in August and will celebrate 30 years of marriage in October with his wife Sandy. He is also awaiting his son's return from an 18 month tour in Afghanistan next month.
