In recent years, when the Legislature kept using education funding as a political football, Val Hoyle got fed up with their antics and decided to stand up for our kids.
Val started out working with the local elementary school Parent Teacher Organization and then joined with Stand for Children, parents, and local teachers to fight for the essential funding our schools -- and our kids -- need to be successful.
Now that she's representing us in Salem, Val takes the same approach to strengthening education. She won't tolerate political game playing when it comes to education funding. Good public schools are so important to our community today and in the future. They're truly the best way to make sure the next generation has a better standard of living than we do.
Val put her education experience to work in developing the right plan to strengthen local schools and colleges:
* Give more children the opportunity to start their educations off right with Head Start and early childhood education.
* Reduce class sizes to increase student performance.
* Provide vocational training, mentors, and apprenticeships for young people who aren't headed to college.
* Put an end to tuition hikes that are pricing many young adults out of higher education.
* Invest in workforce development programs that train our children and retrain those who are out of work for the jobs of tomorrow.
