Congressman Keith Ellison (D-MN) released the following statement in response to this week's announcement by the Israeli cabinet to "liberalize the system by which civilian goods enter Gaza.":

I am heartened by the positive steps that the Israeli government has taken toward alleviating the counterproductive blockade on Gaza while maintaining the safety and security of all Israelis.

For some time I have called for a reexamination of the Israeli policy toward Gaza as I have long believed that the blockade punishes ordinary citizens, strengthens Hamas' control over commerce and undermines Israel's national security.

Although we do not have complete details of the Israeli plan, it is my hope that these actions represent the beginning of a process to normalize the functioning of the Gazan economy and signify future steps to improve the daily lives of the majority of Gaza's citizens.

I continue my call to the international community to work toward the immediate release of Gilad Shalit, and call upon both sides to treat all detained individuals, both Palestinians and Israelis, in accordance with international humanitarian standards.

I further ask that all parties continue to work together in good faith to address the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by promoting a two-state solution during the ongoing proximity talks.
