Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., made the following statement at the conclusion of today's House Education and Labor Committee oversight hearing in Beckley, West Virginia titled, "The Upper Big Branch Mine Tragedy: Testimony of Family Members."
"I'd like to thank all of the families of the Upper Big Branch mine victims for sharing their candid, and at times, heartbreaking testimony at today's oversight field hearing.
"Through their testimony and the testimony of other's present, several consistent issues came to light, particularly around the issue of ventilation.
"Additionally, there were issues expressed surrounding the rights of miners to speak up about violations, the conditions in the mine and the need for whistleblower protections.
"We will work together to craft legislation to address these issues and ensure that these types of hearings will no longer be necessary. Our thoughts and prayers remain with all of the families as the healing process continues."
