Issue Position: Education

Issue Position

South Texas parents work hard because they know education is the ticket to a better future for their children. Second to parents, no one has greater impact on the lives of our children than teachers. If there is any doubt about the need to increase funding for education, consider that the US Department of Labor predicts that over 2 million new jobs will be created in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

As State Representative, I'll fight to:

* Tap the Rainy Day fund if needed to ensure that no teacher loses his or her job because of state budget shortages.
* Create incentives to place more math and science teachers in the classroom to prepare our kids to compete for the jobs of tomorrow.
* Increase funding for Communities in School to ensure more students graduate from high school.
* Expand the Texas Tuition Promise Fund, a new prepayment plan that allows Texas families to lock in tomorrow's college tuition at today's prices.
