Washington's system of campaign finance is badly broken, and the Supreme Court's recent decision on Citizens United v. FEC didn't do anything to help. In fact, it made an already bad situation that much worse by opening up loopholes that only stack the deck further in favor of special interests at the expense of the American people.
That's why I'm signing onto legislation that will help stem the flow of corporate funds and protect the integrity of our democracy.
This legislation would:
* Improve transparency of large contributions for attack ads from organizations, so shareholders know how the money they've invested is being used.
* Require CEOs to claim the political ads they run as their own, the same way elected officials do for campaign ads.
* Restrict foreign corporations, government contractors and TARP bailout recipients from using their funds for political ads.
These changes are vital to protect and maintain the integrity of our democracy. The American people deserve to know who is really behind attack ads. This legislation will go a long way to fix our broken campaign finance system. We cannot allow our elections to be held hostage by corporations and private interest groups. Without this law, corporations could turn our system of government into a pay-to-play auction where perks and taxpayer dollars go to the highest bidder.
