USDA Purchasing $50 Million More Pork for Nutrition Programs

Press Release

Senator Chuck Grassley today released the following statement after the U.S. Department of Agriculture made an announcement he has been pushing for. Grassley wrote a letter to Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack on October 6, 2009 urging the USDA to purchase an additional $100 million of pork for various federal food programs. USDA announced tonight that it would purchase $50 million in pork products for federal nutrition programs.

"This is a win-win situation for the USDA that will provide the best bang for the taxpayers buck. With pork prices low at the moment, there is no better time for the government to stock the shelves for the various federal food programs. It also provides the pork producers, who have been feeling the pinch for far too long, with a market for their products. I appreciate the Secretary's announcement to buy another $50 million in pork products."
