The office of Rep. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., issued the following statement:
"I strongly support our continuing quest for scientific knowledge including research and exploration in space. I cannot support, however, the President's ill-timed plan to spend billions of dollars on ventures to the Moon and Mars when here at home we face such significant budgetary challenges. The administration has failed to provide critical resources for health care, education and veterans' services while committing billions of taxpayer dollars to reconstructing foreign lands. It is well and good to set national goals that reach for the stars, but let's focus those heroic efforts at eliminating our reliance on foreign oil or curing cancer or any number of projects that would produce direct and much-needed benefits here on earth. Now is simply not the time to commit money we don't have shooting for the Moon."
