Location: Pierre, SD
Issues: Labor Unions

Gov. Mike Rounds is calling on South Dakotans to make this Labor Day travel weekend fatality-free.

“The last few months have been especially deadly on our highways,” the Governor said. “I want motorists to make it a point to be especially safe this weekend. That means no drinking and driving. It also means buckling up.”

In July, 18 people died in South Dakota crashes. Preliminary statistics for August show that 13 people were killed in traffic last month. In the first eight months of the year, 80 people lost their lives on South Dakota roadways.

“Most crashes are entirely preventable,” Gov. Rounds said. “Take personal responsibility for your safety, and please follow all traffic laws.”

During the Labor Day holiday weekend last year, two people died and 47 people were injured in traffic crashes in South Dakota.
