Jordan Opposes Job-Killing Legislation
This week, Democrats in Congress introduced the Employee Free Choice Act, a bill that would end secret ballot elections in union organizing campaigns. Known as "card-check" legislation, Congressman Jim Jordan (R-Urbana) opposes the bill, which would eliminate individual freedom and threaten much-needed jobs.
Under this legislation, a simple card would be circulated in workplaces, instead of a secret ballot. Once a majority of workers sign the card, a union would be formed. This violates the main principle of an open democratic society; allowing Americans the freedom of a secret ballot.
"I believe unions can serve a legitimate and important role for American workers. Yet this measure would eliminate their basic right and invite intimidation and coercion into the workplace," said Rep. Jordan.
Jordan is an original co-sponsor of the Secret Ballot Protection Act, a proposal introduced to ensure that workers maintain their right to a secret ballot. The common sense measure protects American workers against coercion, retribution or intimidation by union organizers.
Jordan concluded, "At a time when Democrats are pushing to create trouble in the workplace, I stand on the side of Americans who deserve their freedom and peace of mind."
