Rep. Polis: End The War Responsibly

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Defense

On the 6th anniversary of the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom, U.S. Rep. Jared Polis and his fellow freshman members of the U.S. House of Representatives reiterated their call for a "Responsible Plan" to end the war in Iraq.

In a statement, the members said, "While the country is focused on the shaky economy and egregious abuses of taxpayer dollars like those committed by AIG, we must not forget the tens of thousands of men and women who are still sacrificing in Iraq every day. After six long years, they continue to be exposed to dangerous conditions and extended tours of duty, far from their families, in a war that was ill-conceived and needs to end. We commend President Obama for his support thus far to end the invasion. Now, we urge him to withdraw the troops, ALL THE TROOPS, from Iraq."

The members of Congress making the plea include Donna Edwards (MD-4), Alan Grayson (FL-8), Eric Massa (NY-29), Chellie Pingree (ME-1), Tom Perriello (VA-5), and Jared Polis (CO-2). These members endorse the "Responsible Plan" (www.responsibleplan.com), which calls for withdrawing all troops from Iraq, restoring the vitality of our military, and restoring the U.S. Constitution.

Polis continued "So many new voices were elected to Congress because we promised to come to Washington with a responsible plan to end the War in Iraq. We have not forgotten the brave men and women serving in Iraq and peace and a responsible solution remain our top priorities. I am encouraged by yesterday's announcement that the Obama Administration has put an end to the stop-loss policy, but there is much to be done to bring our brothers, sisters, sons, and daughters home. I applaud President Obama for taking action and look forward to his bringing ALL our troops home safely and treating those who have served our nation with the respect and support that they have more than earned."

Since the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom, more than 4,200 American troops have lost their lives and more than 31,000 have suffered injuries, while as many as a million Iraqis may be dead. The financial costs of the war to the U.S. economy will ultimately exceed $3 trillion.
