Issue Position: Healthcare
Making Health Care Accessible and Affordable for All Virginians
During his nearly two decades in the General Assembly, Senator Deeds has fought to make health care accessible and affordable for all Virginians. He has crafted innovative legislation to ensure every Virginian has the right to choose which doctor they visit and the ability to purchase prescription medicines at a reasonable price.
An advocate for seniors and low-income families, Deeds has spent his time in the General Assembly ensuring they can get the health care they need.
Helping Those Who Need it Most
When a loved one becomes ill, they often rely on their families to take care of them. The number of families caring for aging loved one is growing and will continue to grow. To reduce the burden on these families Deeds worked for an annual $500 tax credit to families caring for aging loved ones at home.
Deeds has fought for nearly a decade to ensure that low-income families and seniors aren't forced to choose between their prescriptions and other necessities. Prescription medicines save lives, but high prices can put them just out of reach of those who need them most. He knows this issue is especially important because low-income families and senior citizens are the ones affected most by the rising cost of prescription drugs.
Improving Mental Health Care
Through out his nearly two decades in the General Assembly, Deeds has sought needed mental health care reforms. In 2005, Deeds crafted innovative policy reforms that required juveniles to receive mental health services after being released from a correctional facility.
This year Deeds responded to the Virginia Tech tragedy by continuing to work for reform of our mental health system. Deeds partnered with his colleagues in both parties to improve the laws governing the treatment of those who pose a danger to themselves or others.
