Lummis: Fairness Doctrine Attacks Free Speech

U.S. Representative Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., is fighting for Wyoming's broadcasters by supporting legislation preventing Washington from bringing back the Fairness Doctrine.

"The so-called ‘Fairness Doctrine' is an attack on free speech, plain and simple, Washington bureaucrats have no business telling Wyoming broadcasters what is or isn't fair reporting. Any news broadcaster worth their salt already presents issues fairly, and I support that kind of comprehensive broadcasting. However, I will fight any attempt by Washington to decide for Wyoming's broadcasters what is fair." Lummis said.

Lummis co-sponsored the "Broadcaster Freedom Act of 2009," H.R. 226, this week. The bill would prevent the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) from re-instituting the Fairness Doctrine.

The Fairness Doctrine was a policy of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that required the holders of broadcast licenses to air opposing viewpoints on controversial issues. The practice was abolished in 1987.

Recently, some in Congress have discussed the possibility of reinstating the doctrine. Lummis will oppose any effort to resurrect the doctrine.
