Election Night Victory Speech

Date: Nov. 4, 2008

Hello Democrats!

Tonight, I am honored to receive the support of Fourth District voters to go back to Washington. Let me thank the families, the seniors, and the students who gave me their vote and put their faith in my work.

Eight years ago, voters sent me to Congress to fight for working families, to fight for seniors, to fight for our children's future. Unfortunately, for eight years I have been forced to fight against George Bush's failed policies and the harm they have caused our families.

That changes today.

Tomorrow morning, we will all awake in a new America.

Tomorrow morning will be a new beginning - a new beginning for working families and for our seniors. It will be a new beginning for our children, for our troops in Iraq, and for our veterans here at home.

I believe in the greatness of America. I believe in the strength of the American people to face the serious challenges confronting our country - from the economy to healthcare, and from energy independence to ending the war in Iraq.

I believe so strongly that tomorrow will be a new beginning because I believe in the man who will lead our nation forward with strength, integrity and courage.

Tomorrow is a new beginning for America because America believes in Barack Obama.

Democrats, this campaign has proven Minnesota wants change. America wants change.

Minnesotans want hope. America wants hope.

But most of all, Minnesotans and people all across this country are ready to end the partisan politics, roll-up our sleeves, and get to work fixing the real problems our families are facing everyday.

The days of obstructionism in Congress are over.

It is time for action. It's time for action because we have jobs to create. It's time for action because 47 million Americans deserve healthcare. It's time for action because there is a war in Iraq that needs to end.

DFLers, the night is still young. We need to count a few more votes before we can celebrate Al Franken joining the U.S. Senate and a few new members of the House.

Let me conclude by again saying thank you to my constituents, my supporters, my staff, and most of all, my family. Let me also thank Minnesota voters for giving Barack Obama a big win.

I grew up in South Saint Paul - a town of hard working, common sense, respectful people. Those lessons I learned in South Saint Paul always stay - hard work, common sense, and respect.

Tonight is a new beginning for America and Democrats will have the responsibility to lead our nation in a new direction. We will do it with hard work, common sense, and respect.

Thank you - and tomorrow, let's get to work building a new America.

Thank you.
