Capito Announces $2 Million in Funding for MATRIC

Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) today announced that the Mid-Atlantic Technology Research and Innovation Center (MATRIC) - which is based in South Charleston - will receive $2 million in federal funding to support the establishment of the Project National Shield Integration Center.

The center will work to coordinate systems security integration to help protect against terrorist attacks, while also supporting the creation of a collaborative system of command and control communications. The funding was included in the US Department of Defense Appropriations bill which was approved by Congress.

"MATRIC has an established record of keeping good jobs in the Kanawha Valley and this is a great opportunity for them to continue their mission of technological research," said Capito.

"With this funding, MATRIC stands to play a key role in creating an improved systems framework for our nation's response to a national security emergency. They'll be working to integrate existing systems and streamline avenues of communication. We can be proud that this work will be taking place in West Virginia."

The Project National Shield Center will build on recommendations of the 9/11 Commission to better coordinate information and operations across levels of government and law enforcement.

Capito will visit with members of MATRIC leadership tomorrow during events surrounding MATRIC's Annual Meeting.
