Issue Position: Education
Working Hard to Strengthen Our Educational System.
While Steny Hoyer strongly believes that we must pay down the national debt and shore up Social Security and Medicare, he also believes we must invest in our future by strengthening our public schools. He strongly supported a plan to reduce class size by hiring 100,000 more teachers, supports efforts to recruit and retain highly qualified teachers, and supports a plan to help local school districts finance school renovations and construction. He supported the bipartisan No Child Left Behind legislation, and believes that we must provide adequate funding in order to provide the reforms to raise the achievement levels of our students. He has sponsored legislation that would help students access higher education by increasing the maximum Pell Grant, and increasing support for student assistance programs. He is also a strong supporter of early childhood programs, such as Head Start. This year, Congressman Hoyer introduced the Full Service Community Schools Act that would provide funding for public elementary or secondary schools that coordinate multiple educational and social service programs in partnerships with school districts, community-based organizations and public/private partnerships.
