Issue Position: Budget Priorities

Fighting for Fiscal Responsibility.

Steny Hoyer is a strong supporter of fiscal responsibility, advocating budget policies that strengthen Social Security and Medicare while also allowing us to balance the budget, pay down the national debt and invest in crucial priorities such as education, the environment and national defense. Congressman Hoyer also has consistently voted for responsible tax relief that permits the nation to meet its other priorities and commitments. Thus, he opposed President Bush's tax plans in 2001 and in 2003 because they were based on unreliable budget projections; disproportionately tilted toward the wealthiest Americans; and threatened to drive the budget back into deficit and increase the national debt. In hindsight, Congressman Hoyer's concerns were correct. This year the Republican fiscal agenda created a deficit of $367 billion, and accumulated deficit would grow by $2 trillion over the next decade threatening Social Security and Medicare, and our ability to invest in the future.
