Issue Position: Thompson on Your Gun Rights

Issue Position

I grew up in a family owned sporting goods business and I know the value of hunting and our proud sporting heritage on our local economies. It extends beyond that however, to a deep belief in rights of individuals to keep and bear arms for hunting purposes but also for self defense. This right is one on which our nation was founded and that was affirmed recently by our Supreme Court in its decision in District of Columbia v. Heller. We must continue to expand these rights.

* Enforcing the Supreme Court's ruling - I strongly support H.R. 6691 that would force Washington D.C. to abide by the court's decision. Other cities will soon need to follow suit and I support any and all legislation that would enforce the court decision.

* Allowing concealed carry in National Parks - The Department of the Interior has recently delayed implementing a policy that would allow law abiding citizens to carry concealed weapons in national parks. I oppose any delay in this process as citizens who can carry just outside the park gates should not have that right revoked once entering a park. This antiquated policy is unconstitutional and should be changed immediately. I would call on the Department of the Interior to move as soon as possible to make a new policy that honors the rights of Americans.

* Encourage states to honor licenses from other states - Working toward a nation that respects our gun rights regardless of state boundaries is something that we should all be happy to encourage. Unfortunately many states do not see reciprocity as a positive goal. I will work with state lawmakers whenever possible to secure gun rights over a vast spectrum, rather than in the limited sense that seems pervasive in many states.
