Under Secretary Dorr and Moran Learn of Progress, Deliver Additional Federal Funding
GREENSBURG - Congressman Jerry Moran and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Under Secretary for Rural Development Thomas Dorr, visited Greensburg this week to receive an update on the ongoing progress in rebuilding the town after an F-5 tornado struck in May of 2007. During the visit, Under Secretary Dorr and Moran learned about projects underway that have been supported by USDA Rural Development funds and also took part in a presentation to deliver additional funding.
"The funds provided by USDA Rural Development have been instrumental in helping the community of Greensburg start the long process of rebuilding after this devastating tornado," Moran said. "I was glad that Under Secretary Dorr had the opportunity to join me in Kansas and see first-hand how the hard-working people of Greensburg have put these dollars to good use."
"USDA Rural Development has a number of programs that can be used by citizens to help them get back on their feet," Under Secretary Dorr said. "These programs can literally assist in building a community from the ground up and we stand ready to help our fellow citizens in the affected states rebuild their communities and their lives."
In Greensburg, Moran and Dorr met with local leaders and then toured the project locations that have been awarded grant funding. Projects in the Greensburg area that have received USDA funds include the City Water Tower and Self-Help Homes; Greensburg Community Self Help Housing Program House; USDA Rural Development Funded Home Repair Project; and BTI John Deere Dealership.
During the visit to Greensburg, Under Secretary Dorr and Moran also participated in two presentations of addition funds for:
* $1.6 million to finance the construction of Oak Haven Plaza Apartments, a 15-unit rental housing facility to be built under USDA Rural Development's Rural Rental Housing Program.
* $300,000 to assist in the construction of a new Kiowa County Maintenance Shop, representing the Agency's Community Facility Direct Loan program.
