Medicare is one of the most successful health care programs our country has ever known. And it is my goal to make it even better.
We missed a historic opportunity a few years back to create a comprehensive and predictable prescription drug benefit for seniors. Instead, a prescription drug benefit was drafted with a great deal of input from the drug companies that fell short of the desired goal.
I know first hand through my work in the Congress of the critical role Medicare plays both in the lives of senior citizens and to the vitality of the Massachusetts' economy. Many people aren't aware that Medicare finances graduate medical education, and is a very significant contributor to the strong reputation of the many esteemed Massachusetts teaching hospitals.
Like Social Security, Medicare is a program that can and will be adjusted with time in order to meet our future needs, but its contribution to the health of seniors cannot be underestimated.
