One of the greatest moments of my life was when the bill creating the Hope Scholarship was signed into law, using lottery proceeds to provide scholarship assistance to the children of Tennessee. It wasn't just pride over an accomplishment--- It was an overwhelming sense of joy that the State of Tennessee was going to provide assistance to children who otherwise might not have been able to seek a higher education. I put many years of hard work into that effort.
But that was merely the beginning of my efforts to create educational opportuities. The first week I was in Congress, as part of the "100 Hours Initiative", I cosponsored and voted for a bill that cut the interest rate for a college loan in half.
I also supported the Student Loan Sunshine Act, which is designed to make sure that all the terms of a student loan are properly disclosed to and discussed with the borrower.
You can be certain that the United States Congress has not addressed the issue of student loans for the last time, and I will proudly represent the interests of the college students of the Ninth District and beyond.
