Capito Statement on "Use it Or Lose It" Energy Bill
Flawed Legislation Re-Enacts Current Law as West Virginians Look for REAL Solutions
Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) released the following statement today to set the record straight on severely flawed "energy" legislation that came before the House of Representatives this afternoon:
"Use it or Lose It is already the law," said Capito in a speech on the floor of the House of Representatives. "The Secretary of the Interior can already cancel a lease if the lessee fails to comply with the terms.
" I believe West Virginians would rather see us take up legislation that will actually lead to a new and more forward-thinking energy policy - rather than watch us waste our time passing legislation that's already on the books. That means new exploration, coal-to-liquids and renewables."
"If the best the Majority can do is to restate current law that's fine - but I think most Americans and West Virginians understand that the time has come for a more serious and comprehensive debate on this issue. That's what they deserve."
Capito has called for a more complete discussion of the need to invest in increased domestic energy exploration, coal-to-liquid technology, conservation efforts and the use of renewable energy technology such as wind and biomass.
The Congresswoman has also introduced the Clean Coal-Derived Fuel for Energy Security Act to encourage the use of coal-derived fuel.
Earlier today she unveiled her own Energy Action Center, an energy-focused website designed as a resource for West Virginians interested in the issue of energy independence and solutions to high energy costs.
