Issue Position: Impeachment

Issue Position

For the last seven years, we have been burdened by an administration that has disrespected the rule of law, engaged in warrant-less wiretaps, abandoned habeas corpus, and chipped away at our civil rights. It's no wonder that we have lost so much respect around the world.

Our system of government, with three distinct branches, was built to provide for accountability, and holding the president and his administration accountable should be a priority. This Congress should hold impeachment hearings to examine the actions of the Bush Administration.

The issue of impeachment is really about how people view and understand the Constitution, and it's much bigger than our current President. As in the Watergate era, we are at a "teachable moment" when the public, as well as the politicians and government officials, would benefit from a full public investigation and review of the substantial body of information that suggests that the Bush administration has disregarded the rule of law it pledged to uphold.

Impeachment is not a matter of political strategy or convenience, but an important safeguard of our Democracy.
