House leaders today appointed Congressman Jerry Moran to the farm bill conference committee. The conference committee is made up of agricultural leaders from the House and Senate. The committee will work out differences in the two versions of the farm bill passed by the House and Senate.
"This process has been delayed for far too long. There is a substantial amount of work to be done to work out the differences in the farm bill and little time to accomplish that goal," Moran said. "Increasingly, there is pressure to cut programs that are essential to Kansas producers. This new bill has been heavily influenced by people and groups with interests outside rural America. My focus will be to keep the emphasis of this important bill on our nation's farmers and ranchers and to ensure a strong safety net for producers."
The 2002 Farm Bill expired on September 30, 2007. Since that time, Congress has passed two short-term extensions of the 2002 Farm Bill, the latest of which is set to expire on April 18, 2008.
Moran is a senior member of the House Committee on Agriculture where he serves as the Republican leader of the Subcommittee on General Farm Commodities and Risk Management.
