Walberg Weekly Wrap-Up

Press Release

Date: March 28, 2008
Location: Washington, DC

As many of you may know, on February 17, 2009, American television stations will begin transmitting with only digital signals. Broadcast stations will no longer use analog format.

If you currently have an analog television without a cable or satellite feed, you will need a converter box to receive the new digital feed. Though this transition will be an inconvenience for many folks, there are positive benefits to the change.

Years ago, Congress mandated the upcoming move to all-digital television broadcasting for several reasons. The current analog broadcasting system transmits over radio frequency waves. The new Digital Television (DTV) will send a higher quality, more efficient signal that has the capability of both standard and high definition television, as well as datacasting and multicasting.

Digital broadcasting will free the analog radio frequencies for use by emergency responders, benefiting police and fire departments and other first responders. Digital television also means improved picture and sound quality and likely more program options for television consumers. The freed up frequencies may also be used to improve wireless services for telecommunications customers.

If you currently have an analog television and use your television in analog format and not cable or satellite, you will need to purchase a DTV converter box before February 17, 2009. A digital-to-analog converter box transposes the new digital signal to an analog reception for your television, allowing you to continue to use your current television set without any noticeable differences in the appearance of the picture.

The demand for these converter boxes is strong, and it is important to look into acquiring one sooner rather than later. The Department of Commerce and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration are currently offering two $40 coupons per household that can be used for the purchase of the converter box. The box generally costs anywhere from $40-70.

Two coupons may not be combined to purchase one converter box. To request coupons, apply by online at www.dtv2009.gov or by calling 1-888-DTV-2009 (1-888-388-2009). More information about the transition is available at www.dtv2009.gov.

If you do not use cable or satellite and don't know if you receive an analog signal, check with your cable company to see if your television is compatible with a digital signal to prevent an unnecessary purchase.

District Tour Wrap-Up
I really enjoyed seeing many of you at the town hall meetings, coffee hours, and seminars I held over the past week. Thank you for your questions, comments and concerns.

I hosted foreclosure workshops in Battle Creek and Jackson and hopefully our events and similar events across south-central Michigan will provide assistance to struggling families.

A lack of leadership in Lansing and a slumping national economy have led to challenging times for Michiganders. Our economy has frustrated people who've had dreams of home ownership and put many folks in difficult situations. The best thing any struggling family can do is seek help as early as possible.

If you were unable to attend the town hall meetings and foreclosure workshops but would like more information, please call my office at 877-846-6407.
