Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3) issued the following statement about the Food and Drug Administration's latest campaign to improve its post-market safety efforts.

"There may be some useful measures in the FDA's new initiative, but a PR campaign will do very little to change the agency's approach to post-market safety.

"While this initiative appears to be an acknowledgement by the FDA that its industry first approach is not working, the FDA needs a serious overhaul to change the imbalance of power that favors drug companies. For the FDA to now say that safety is finally coming first will provide little comfort to those who have been harmed as a result of their seemingly dismissive attitude toward performing its regulatory activities. Drug safety is a matter of life and death and we need a regulatory agency that recognizes this reality."
