Curbing Social Security Number Abuse
U.S. Representative John Boozman (R-AR) today announced his support of legislation which would curb the fraudulent use of Social Security account numbers.
H.R. 136, the "Identity Theft Notification Act of 2007," offered by Rep. Elton Gellegly (R-CA), would amend the Social Security Act to require notification of individuals and appropriate authorities of evidence that individual Social Security account numbers are being misused.
"This bill will take a significant step toward curbing Social Security identification fraud, as well as close another loophole that illegal immigrants use to perform unauthorized work in the United States," Boozman said. "In the age of ID theft, this is a common-sense step toward protecting the personal and financial security of law-abiding Americans."
Under the legislation, notification will be made when, during any calendar year, there are eight or more instances of an employer submitting wage reports on an employee under the same social security account number, and at least 4 different addresses are set forth in the reports in connection with the same social security account number.
