Congresswoman Co-Sponsors Legislation to Uphold the Rule of Law and Promote Employer Verification

Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) today expressed her support for legislation that would prevent states from providing driver's licenses to illegal aliens and promote an electronic process of employer verification.

"It is preposterous to suggest that illegal immigrants should receive driver's licenses," said Capito, who announced that she is a co-sponsor of legislation offered by Reps. Peter King (R-NY), Peter Sessions (R-TX), Vito Fosella (R-NY) and Tom Latham (R-IA) that would address the issue.

"Giving driver's licenses to illegal aliens not only undermines the rule of law, but jeopardizes national security. My colleagues have introduced legislation that seeks a common sense solution to an issue that is important to West Virginians and I'm happy to support their effort."

The legislation takes the form of three separate measures and would ensure that driver's license recipients are legally present in the United States, encourage compliance with the REAL ID Act and express the sense of the House that states should not issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.

Capito is also an original co-sponsor of the Secure America with Verification and Enforcement Act (SAVE Act) which seeks to expand employer access to a system of electronic eligibility verification for employees. The bill, authored by Rep. Heath Shuler (D-NC) and introduced by a bipartisan coalition of nearly 90 lawmakers, would also increase the capabilities of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.

"This is a bipartisan effort to affect real reform and uphold the law," said Capito. "The SAVE Act has strong support from Republicans and Democrats and would provide needed resources to Border Patrol, streamline the process for employee verification and strengthen enforcement through ICE."
