Capito: SCHIP Veto is Mistake
Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) today expressed her disappointment over President Bush's decision to veto a bill that would reauthorize the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP).
"Nearly 30,000 low-income children in West Virginia would have access to healthcare under this program," said Capito. "This veto is a setback to a bill that received strong bipartisan support. Now we're back to square one. We owe West Virginia's children the opportunity to receive the healthcare that they need."
SCHIP provides health insurance coverage to uninsured children whose families are ineligible for Medicaid but can't afford private insurance. Approximately 25,000 children in West Virginia currently receive coverage under SCHIP and this legislation would have made it possible to enroll thousands of additional low-income children.
Rep. Capito has been a strong supporter of SCHIP and advocated for its implementation when the program was first created in 1997.
