Moran Brings Congressional Democrat Leader to the Farm

Connecticut Representative to Join Moran on Visits to Farm, Ethanol Facility, Kansas State Fair

HUTCHINSON - Congressman Jerry Moran today announced that Democratic Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut will join him in Kansas next week to learn more about agriculture on the Great Plains. DeLauro serves as the chair of the U.S. House Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration Appropriations Subcommittee, which oversees the $98 billion budget for the Department of Agriculture, FDA, Commodity Futures Trading Commission and Farm Credit Administration.

"With the Congresswoman's important position in the U.S. House directing funds for agriculture, I wanted to take the opportunity to show her what life is like in Kansas and the significant role our farmers and ranchers play in the United States economy," Moran said. "With rural areas losing representation in Congress, this will be a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between two members of Congress who represent two very different parts of the country."

As part of the tour, Moran and DeLauro will visit several sites in south central Kansas on September 12-13, including a farm visit, hospital tour, ethanol meeting, as well as time at the state fair. DeLauro's visit comes at an important time as Congress works toward completing the 2007 Farm Bill. Moran and DeLauro will hear from producers about the volatile nature of farming and ranching and about life in rural America.

"I am very excited about my upcoming trip to Kansas and am appreciative of the generous invitation to visit from Congressman Moran," DeLauro said. "This visit offers a special opportunity to experience life in rural America so we can make smarter federal investments. Federal investment is critical to facilitate growth in rural areas and in this year's Agriculture Appropriations bill we make important investments to preserve infrastructure, build new opportunities and close the gap in medical and educational resources."

In addition to DeLauro's visit, Moran will take part in several events at the Kansas State Fair, including the annual Kansas Farm Bureau Leadership Breakfast and a farm bill forum hosted by WIBW Radio on Saturday, September 8. Moran will also have an information booth available throughout the state fair with members of his staff available to answer questions and provide information to fairgoers. The booth will be located in the Pride of Kansas Building.

DeLauro is in her ninth term in Congress. Her Connecticut district includes 25 cities and towns along the east coast shoreline, including New Haven and Yale University, and is home to numerous manufacturing, technology and bio-medical businesses. Moran is a senior member of the House Committee on Agriculture.
