Capito Statement on SCHIP Reauthorization

After voting today to reauthorize the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), Rep. Shelley Moore Capito issued the following statement highlighting the need to continue working to address the bill's shortcomings:

"This legislation is far from perfect, but it won my support because of my longstanding belief in SCHIP and the fact that the program must be reauthorized by September 30 before it expires. During my time in the West Virginia state legislature, I worked hard to first implement SCHIP in West Virginia, and I've seen the good it has done for low-income families.

"However, I am disappointed this legislation was brought forward in its current form. Most notably, this bill's Medicare provisions are very troubling, and create a false choice between health care for children and seniors.

"We are dealing with a tight time frame to reauthorize SCHIP; should this bill make it to conference with the Senate, the Medicare provision and other troubling provisions within this bill should be addressed in order to create a final product that more closely resembles SCHIP's original intent, which is to provide health insurance to the truly underserved."
