DeLauro Statement on Toy Recall

Press Release

Date: Aug. 2, 2007
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3) issued the following statement about the worldwide recall of 1.5 million toys made for Mattel's Fisher-Price because the imported toys were made with lead-based paint. The toys being recalled include popular characters like Elmo, Big Bird and Dora the explorer. This recall follows the June recall of 1.5 million Thomas & Friends toy trains also made with lead-based paint.

"Yet again this year, our children have been placed at risk because imported toys were made with lead based paint. Lead is highly toxic for children and has been connected with developmental problems and lower IQ levels. Increasingly, lead contamination is being found in children's toys and jewelry, rather than the traditional source of lead-based paint in older homes.

"The latest in a string of contaminated imports was found because of an investigation launched by the manufacturer, not the Consumer Product Safety Commission - the agency responsible for the safety of toys. After the earlier recall, I would have expected the Commission to increase its vigilance of imported toys. That they have not is disturbing.

"In light of this latest recall, I am pleased that the U.S. House of Representatives provided an increase in funding for the Consumer Product Safety Commission and rejected the President's proposal to further reduce their staff.

"As consumers, we want to know that the products we purchase are safe, particularly when it comes to toys for our children. Our children should be able to play with lead-free toys."
